What if the very traits that make autistic students different—their intense focus and unique perspectives—could become their greatest strengths? Over the last decade at Islands of Brilliance (IOB), weʼve seen how this approach has the power to transform.

Founded in Milwaukee in 2012, IOB began with a simple premise: pair each autistic student one-on-one with a design professional who would teach them valuable software skills. What emerged was far more powerful. Students didnʼt just learn Photoshop or Illustrator; they discovered their voice, built confidence, and connected with mentors who saw their brilliance rather than their barriers.

Today our mission remains clear: by using creativity, technology, and mentorship, we aim to positively change studentsʼ perceptions of themselves and promote broader community recognition of neurodivergent individuals as people with unique strengths and unlimited abilities.

Programs Built on Strengths, Not Deficits

IOB meets students where they are through three distinct program levels. Doodle Lounge offers free-form creative spaces where students set the pace. Foundation programs provide one-on-one mentorship exploring digital arts software. Digital Academy, our most advanced track, prepares young adults for creative careers through project-based learning. Across all programs, self-awareness and social skills are integrated into creative projects—students practice collaboration, communication, and self-advocacy while building meaningful portfolios.

Students didnʼt just learn Photoshop or Illustrator; they discovered their voice, built confidence, and connected with mentors who saw their brilliance.

The heart of our methodology is simple but revolutionary: we start with each studentʼs passions and interests, then use creativity and technology as a vehicle for growth. A student obsessed with trains might design animated transit systems. Another fascinated by mythology might create digital characters and worlds. Their interests become the entry point to learning skills that transfer to employment and independence.

Results That Matter

The outcomes speak for themselves. Among Digital Academy participants weʼve tracked since 2019, 92% have secured employment during high school or gained meaningful work experience—a powerful indicator of future success. Even more remarkable, 73% have gone on to postsecondary education, pursuing degrees at universities and technical colleges. These numbers stand in stark contrast to the 85% unemployment rate facing autistic adults nationwide.

Brilliant Backpack: Scaling Impact for Schools

The next challenge was clear: if our approach works, how do we reach more students? Enter Brilliant Backpack, our train-the-trainer model that puts IOBʼs proven methodologies in the hands of schools, service organizations, and community partners.

Brilliant Backpack isnʼt another off-the-shelf curriculum. Itʼs a comprehensive implementation framework that includes live training sessions, ongoing support through an online resource library, and monthly virtual office hours with IOB staff and a growing network of peer educators. Schools receive customized guidance that honors their unique culture and resources.

This model addresses a critical need. With 50% of new special education teachers leaving the profession within their first few years and 70% of schools reporting special education vacancies, educators are often overworked and under-resourced. Brilliant Backpack provides practical, sustainable tools that reduce teacher burden while dramatically improving student engagement and outcomes.

A Creative Flag for Every Student

At IOB, we encourage exploration and celebrate what each student discovers. No two creative flags are alike, and when these multicolored flags come together, the result is one of the most unifying moments we experience.

Every neurodivergent student has unique gifts waiting to be recognized. Through creativity, technology, and authentic connection, weʼre changing the narrative—one brilliant student at a time.
