Balanced Flower Designs

Image

The Essential Question
How can we use simple lines and shapes to create expressive flower designs?

Objective
Students will create balanced flower designs by layering and overlapping circles, shapes, and lines.

Materials

  • 12 x 18" (30 x 45 cm) paper
  • various sizes and colors of pre-cut paper circles
  • colored markers or crayons
  • glue
Procedures

Step 1
Show and discuss images of flower designs. These could come from nature, paintings, or patterns in fabrics. Ask students what shapes and other elements (lines) they see in the flowers.

Step 2
Have students select a large pre-cut circle and glue it to their paper. This will be the center of their flower.

Step 3
Using colored markers or crayons, guide students to draw petals by creating various shapes (e.g., ovals, triangles, hearts) and lines extending from the circle. Encourage them to experiment with line and form, then color in the petals.

Step 4
Students can add more flowers, circles, and shapes to fill their paper and create a balanced design.

Assessment
Did students use a variety of lines, shapes, and sizes to create flowers? Did they create a balanced flower design?
