How can students create a sketchbook page that will be ongoing throughout the school year?
Students will create a Piet Mondrian–inspired grid incorporating thirty or more sketches based on personal observation and imagination. Students will use drawing and mixed-media techniques of their choice to complete the page throughout the school year.
Create the grid: Ask students to place a watercolor dot, using plenty of water mixed with pigment, near the top of the paper. Have them lift the paper and tap it to encourage the watercolor to flow down the page. Students should repeat this process across the top of the paper, then turn the paper and apply the same technique to create a grid of spaces. Encourage students to create at least thirty-six spaces so they can add a new drawing once a week.
Step 2
Encourage students to continue working on their sketchbook pages throughout the school year, especially when they have extra time at the end of class.
Step 3
Provide opportunities for students to experiment with a variety of drawing and mixed-media materials.
Step 4
Ask students to incorporate different subjects inspired by personal observation and imagination.
Did students fill their sketchbook page with at least thirty original sketches? Did students explore a variety of subjects and creative ideas? Did students experiment with different artistic media?
