Early Childhood
The Essential Question
How can we use color to share expression?
Objective
Students will use a variety of techniques and processes to create an engaging self-portrait.
Materials
small standing mirrors, white copy paper, fine-point black permanent markers, foil sheets (cut to same size as copy paper), washable markers, spray bottle, water
Procedures
1. Students use a mirror for reference and draw a simple self-portrait in black permanent marker. They set the drawing aside until step three.
2. Students color a foil sheet using washable markers, experimenting with different color combinations to communicate emotions or expressions.
3. With teacher assistance, students spray their foil sheet with water (about five sprays). Students then press their copy paper (illustration-side down) onto the foil. The washable marker will make a print on the copy paper.
4. Students add additional details and engage in a discussion to explain their expression.
Assessment
Did students use a combination of methods to create a self-portrait? Does the portrait communicate an emotion or expression, and can students use their vocabulary to describe it?
