There were five minutes left on the clock to complete our box containing a to-scale model of the Land of Oz. My team, comprising two guys whom I had just met a couple of hours beforehand, cobbled on hot glue and pasted down plastic flowers to create the fields of tulips. Quickly, we discussed how to add more color and depth to our scene and decided to divide and conquer the rest of the tasks.

Despite only meeting my teammates mere hours beforehand, we easily fell into a rhythm of collaboration and communication during this challenge. It was through these skills that we were not only able to create a to-scale, colored model box, but also present it to the cohort after only an hour and a half of work time.

My experience at Springboard to Design (SB2D) showed me that the entire theatre industry is built on effective collaboration and community building. I continue to bring the skills I cultivated not just to my own community theatre, but also to the way I approach my homework or group projects. Springboard has taught me that community and collaboration are essential not only to creating the magic of theatre, but also to get us through the mundane tasks of everyday life.

Springboard to Design is a tuition-free theatrical design mentorship and education program for high-school students from underrepresented communities. Presented by Design Action and led by Tony Award–winning designers Clint Ramos and David Zinn, the weeklong intensive offers high-school students the chance to dive into the world of theatrical design, no experience required. Through hands-on workshops, seminars, and access to Broadway and off-Broadway productions, students explore set, costume, lighting, projection, and sound design under the mentorship of award-winning theatre professionals.

The program supports students to grow in confidence, creativity, and a sense of community, affirming that they have the power to build meaningful, fulfilling careers.

Powerful Possibilities
SB2D opens the doors to possibilities students may never have imagined were within their reach. It was created as an opportunity for underrepresented high-school students, including students who have limited or no access to theatre, to dive into the world of theatre design and discover new artistic possibilities. The program supports students to grow in confidence, creativity, and a sense of community, affirming that they have the power to build meaningful, fulfilling careers.
