TEACHING SUGGESTION

Mindful Moment: Five Senses Awareness Exercise

Image

This mindfulness practice connects students to the world around them using all their senses. The exercise can help them become aware of the present moment whenever a formal mindfulness practice might not be practical.

Mindful Moment: Five Senses Awareness Exercise
Guide students through the following steps using this suggested language:

  1. Notice five things you can see. Look to your right, left, up and down, and behind you.

  2. Notice four things you can feel. Become aware of the texture of your clothing, hands, art materials, or the surface of your desk.

  3. Notice three things you can hear. Listen for sounds both inside and outside.

  4. Notice two things you can smell. Pay attention to scents in or out of the classroom.

  5. Notice one thing you can taste. This could be the taste in your mouth or a snack or drink nearby.
