Methods of Drawing

Image

Artwork by Aurora B., grade eleven.

The Essential Question

Why do we draw the way that we do? How can we incorporate several methods of drawing into one artwork?

Objective

Students will research different approaches to drawing, including picture plane and the grid method, to illustrate their hand.

Materials

transparency sheets, masking tape, permanent markers, rulers, sketchbooks, pencils, washable markers, drawing pencils

Procedures

  1. Students research different drawing methods and create a picture plane.
  2. Students draw their own hand on their picture plane with a washable marker.
  3. Next, students research the grid method and draw a grid with washable marker on their picture plane. Next, they create a matching grid in their sketchbook, transferring the image of their hand into their sketchbook using the grid method. Students erase the grid carefully when they are finished drawing.
  4. Students research value and use drawing pencils to create four value scales in their sketchbook: smooth, hatching, crosshatching, and stippling.
  5. Students complete their hand drawing with realistic value and a creative background.

Assessment

Students will show an understanding of the picture plane, the grid method, and value in their artwork, and their ability to discuss artwork by participating in a small group or class critique.
