The Essential Question

How can we create a visual representation of a significant memory?

Objective

Students will use found objects and recycled items to make a collagraph print of a special food.

Materials

large pieces of corrugated cardboard, cardboard cutter, found items and other embellishments (cotton balls, straws, toothpicks, small gravel, etc.), tempera paint, drawing paper, oil pastels, heavy board

Procedures

  1. Ask students to choose a food or drink item that holds special meaning—something they associate with a fond memory or an important person. Ask them to create a sketch of their work.
  2. Students cut the base shape of their food from corrugated cardboard. Next, they glue on items and embellishments to create texture. Allow the cardboard to dry completely before the next step.
  3. Students apply a thick coating of tempera paint to their assembled printing plate. Then they center and place a sheet of paper over the plate, covering it with heavy board to distribute weight evenly. Students can also use their body weight to press on the board.
  4. Students pull their paper from the plate and allow it to dry. They embellish and add details using oil pastels or gel crayons.

Assessment

Did students build up texture on their printing plate and detail on their finished print? Does the print represent a specific food symbolizing an important memory or person?
