The Essential Question
How do artists use line to create a sense of movement?
Objective
Students will investigate the work of artist Sol LeWitt and use repeating lines to create original artworks.
Materials
paper or card stock, scratch paper, broad-line or chisel-tip markers in various colors
Procedures
1. Show students the works of Sol LeWitt. Ask them what they notice about his use of line and color. Do they see movement in the works?
2. Distribute markers and scratch paper. Students practice marker control while creating long lines that stretch from one end of the paper to the other.
3. After demonstrating good artistry and discussing how repetition of lines can create movement, give students a sheet of paper or card stock. Students use markers to fill the entire paper with lines, changing directions to add interest and show movement.
Assessment
Did students demonstrate control of line thickness and utilize repetition to create movement?
