Elementary
The Essential Questions
How can students be introduced to different types of lines?
Objective
Students will draw and identify different types of lines.
Materials
9 x 12" (23 x 30 cm) watercolor paper, pencils, black oil pastels, brushes, water cups, cake tempera or watercolor paint, smaller piece of paper (for bug drawing), black permanent markers, glue sticks, scissors
Procedures
1. Ask students to name some different types of lines. Add to the conversation if needed and review types of lines that werenʼt mentioned.
2. Distribute watercolor paper and pencils. Ask students to follow along as you draw five different types of lines horizontally across the paper, spacing them out vertically to fill the page.
3. Trace over the pencil lines with black oil pastel. Ask students to identify each line as they trace them.
4. Distribute brushes, water cups, and cake tempera or watercolor paint. Demonstrate using a different color paint to fill in the sections between each line. Have students paint and assist them as needed.
5. Bring students together to brainstorm a quick list of different kinds of bugs. Write the name of each bug and draw a simple sketch on the board.
6. Ask students to choose a bug and draw it in pencil on a small piece of paper, then trace the bug with a black permanent marker and cut and glue it onto their painted “rug” paper.
Assessment
Did students show an understanding of different types of lines? Did students follow directions and use materials safely and properly?
