ART CAREER

Natural Science Illustration

Image

Natural science illustrators use drawing, observation, and scientific concepts to communicate information about the natural world. They become experts in a variety of art media such as drawing, painting, and digital tools to educate audiences through accurate visuals. The work may be freelance or on staff for educational, research, and marketing departments at publishers, museums, zoos, and other institutions. Some colleges offer certificates and degrees in scientific illustration. As artists, natural science illustrators demonstrate artistic behaviors such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Student Engagement Tip: Scientific observation discussions revolve around how naturalists such as John James Audubon used observation. Natural items such as shells, bones, insects, and leaves can be set up at different centers in the room for students to observe and sketch. Allot students ten to fifteen minutes at each center before they rotate to the next one.
