The Essential Question
What responsibilities come with the freedom to create?

Objective
Students will create an artwork centered on the question, Why is identity important?

Materials
sketchbooks, pencils, erasers, iPad or smartphone, raster graphics editor such as ibisPaint, Procreate, or Adobe Photoshop

Procedures
1. Students draw from their own personal life experiences to conceptualize ideas that address the objective in a digital illustration.
2. Students draft thumbnail sketches to provide themselves with a sense of artistic direction. Ask them to think about the importance of intent: What do they want the viewer to understand about them or about the concept of identity?
3. Students use personal photographs and a raster graphics editor to create a narrative and compose their composition using the elements of art and principles of design and the Postmodern Principles.
4. Students consult with the teacher about halfway through their composition to receive feedback.

Assessment
Students write a description of their artwork in 200 to 300 words.
