This is a tape drawing of a monster’s hand that has broken through the door and is reaching for the doorknob. The student tried a few times to draw the hand but struggled to create the effect of the hand breaking through the wood. We recommended using tape to make a 3D sculpture of the hand instead.

The student wrapped tape around another student’s hand to create a “tape casting” that he was able to pull off and reassemble before using more tape to attach it to the wall. Tape casting is the technique of wrapping tape, sticky side out, and adding layers of tape, sticky side in, to make a tape shell of an object.

When attaching 3D elements to the wall, remind students to be intentional about the tape lines. Here, the structural lines become part of the pattern of the door cracking.
