Middle School
The Essential Question
How can we remind ourselves to enjoy moments of mindfulness in our art-making and daily activities?
Objective
Students will create a simple object that will help them focus and remind them to breathe.
Materials
air-dry modeling clay or pottery clay, glaze or glossy paint
Procedures
1. Introduce circular and square breathing exercises. (Optional: Introduce finger mazes.)
2. Offer students a small piece of clay and ask them to form it into a round or square disc. Show students how to smooth the clay. Tell them they can add their thumbprint or etch a simple finger maze, if they wish. Then have students label their object with their name, class number, or other identification.
3. Air-dry or fire the clay (depending on the material) and have students paint their pieces with a smooth glaze or finish.
4. Show students how to run their thumb or forefinger around their shape to inspire square or circular breathing. Encourage them to keep the object nearby in their pocket or desk.
Assessment
Ask students how they feel before and after one deep breath. Ask them to consider when they feel most stressed during the day. Ask students how a small object and practice can ground them and remind them to breathe when they feel stressed. You might also consider asking what other strategies they can use to manage stress.
