Lines and Shapes Collage

The Essential Question
How do artists experiment with lines and shapes to create an abstract artwork?

Objective
Students will investigate the work of Reggie Laurent and use lines and shapes to create a mixed-media collage.

Materials
black paper, colored paper, oil pastels, glue, scissors

Procedures
1. Show students the work of Reggie Laurent and discuss his use of lines and shapes. Then talk with students about abstract art and how Laurent develops his artwork.
2. Tell students they will create their own abstract collages inspired by Laurentʼs art, using organic and geometric shapes and line variety. Provide each student with a sheet of black paper. Ask students to arrange paper shapes of various colors and sizes, using the black paper as a background. Students can cut their own shapes or use pre-cut shapes. Guide them to experiment with arranging their composition, then glue their shapes down when they are happy with the placement.
3. Once students have their shapes glued down, give them oil pastels to add line designs. Guide students back to Laurentʼs work and revisit how he uses lines to fill in space.
4. After their collages are created, have students participate in a gallery walk, or meet with students individually to discuss their ideas and process.

Assessment
