The Essential Question
How does art and design communicate stories and ideas?
Objective
Students will create a pen and ink illustration that tells a story.
Materials
India ink, drawing tools (fine-tipped markers, etc.), sketchbooks, 11 x 14" (28 x 35.5 cm) 90 lb white sulphite drawing paper, pencils, erasers, water cups, brushes, paper towels
Procedures
1. Review or demonstrate four pen and ink techniques with students: stippling, hatching, cross-hatching, and ink wash.
2. Students brainstorm various ideas in their sketchbooks that focus on a specific topic. Students create a narrative and include foreground, middle ground, and background in their composition.
3. Students select one of their sketches to recreate as a final drawing on white sulphite drawing paper.
4. Students draw their scene in pencil first, then outline it with their chosen drawing tool. Students add details, value, and contrast by apply techniques reviewed previously (stippling, hatching, cross-hatching, ink wash).
5. Students attach their finished work to matboard and title, sign, and display it.
Assessment
Students will participate in Jamboard (digital interactive whiteboard) activity and respond to a series of questions.
